Law Clerk and Law Student John P. McGuire Reflects on the Court’s Visit to SIU Carbondale

On March 18th, the Illinois Supreme Court visited Carbondale, Illinois, and more specifically, Southern Illinois University. I had the privilege to hear the oral argument on the following cases:

  • No. 130344 - People State of Illinois, Appellant, v. Krystle L. Hoffman, Appellee., Appellate Court, Second District.
  • No. 130931 - Viera Hulsh, Appellant, v. Maya Hulsh et al., Appellees., Appellate Court, First District.

There were well over 900 attendees at this event, including the entirety of the student body at SIU Simmons Law School. These road trip hearings are a part of the Court’s “Riding the Circuit”, where The Illinois Supreme Court has heard various cases in several locations around the State.

Attending this event was a priceless experience, for both me and the rest of the law students, as well as the Southern Illinois community, giving all a rare opportunity to witness the Illinois Supreme Court working right within our own community.

As a student of the law, it was especially impactful, offering me a direct view of the Court’s hearing process and the oral arguments of the attorneys, whose practice that I am working towards in my own legal career. I plan to bring this experience to my work at Airdo Werwas, LLC, when I return as a law clerk in the Summer of 2025.
